It's easy to miss Five Corners Cafe, nestled away from the restaurant strip along Johnston Road in White Rock. Its modest building stands without any flashy sign or grand exterior. Despite that, you'll be surprised to see a continuous foot traffic coming in and out of the cafe. At Five Corners, vintage is not a concept but rather an honest value proposition. It has been around serving unadulterated homey goodness breakfast in White Rock for more than 30 years.
You'll be welcomed by a friendly atmosphere, stirring a feeling of community where everyone knows everyone. The servers know the guests well enough that they call them by their first names and engage in a chatter like close neighbours do. We went on a weekday but the ambiance made me feel like I'm dining on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The 60's music, red upholstered booth seating, and faces of Hollywood icons hanging on the wall added to the retro vibe of the cafe.

Five Corners menu is unassuming, offering a usual American breakfast of pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausages and eggs benedict. Truth be told, the food was nothing out of the ordinary and will make you wonder what regular guests love about this place. But after my dining experience, I kind of get it. In an era where everything is made to look too good to the point of being grandiose, there is comfort in something so simple and honest. And that's what this cafe offers, something homey, easy and laid back, a refuge from the noise that overwhelms us. This is definitely not my last visit.
