Every kid raised in a Filipino home understands that we are not oriented to eat clean. Sure, our parents will tell us to eat our veggies from time to time while we voraciously devour chicken adobo and fried pork chops on the side. Growing up in a household where chubbiness equates to healthy, it was hard to train myself to eat fruits and vegetables. This lifestyle took a toll on me when I hit my mid 20's. My metabolism slowed down and I became heavier with every year that passed. Controlling how much I eat is the easy part, but teaching myself to eat right? That's a totally different challenge.
As I push myself to eat better, I realized that healthy eating is not about depriving myself. It's about choosing what's good for you and what you enjoy. I learned this by being adventurous with my choices. I tried blending fruit and veggie smoothies and start to discover the combinations that work best for my taste buds. My current favourites are smoothie bowls which I eat for breakfast in lieu of cereals and bacon. It's easy to make and lovely on the plate- truly a feast for the eyes and the palate.
